Chorin is an applied mathematician at Berkeley who founded much of modern computational fluid dynamics, notably the projection method for solving the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations and vortex methods, earning the National Medal of Science. Born into a Jewish family in Warsaw, his family fled the Holocaust, and he later studied in Switzerland and Israel.
