Balas was a Carnegie Mellon mathematician who founded disjunctive programming, now a central tool in integer and combinatorial optimization, and won the 1995 von Neumann Theory Prize. Born into a Hungarian Jewish family in Transylvania, he survived Nazi-era imprisonment (escaping the fascist authorities) and later Stalinist imprisonment, recounted in his memoir 'Will to Freedom.'
