Cohen, a Dutch Jewish physicist who survived the Nazi occupation in hiding, became a leading theorist of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, notably co-formulating the fluctuation theorem for systems driven far from equilibrium. He spent his career at Rockefeller University and received the 2004 Boltzmann Medal.
