Biography

David Wechsler is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Psychologist who created the Wechsler intelligence scales

How & why

Wechsler was a Jewish American psychologist who created the Wechsler intelligence scales — including the WAIS for adults and the WISC for children — which became the most widely used individual IQ tests in the world. He defined intelligence as a global capacity and measured it across multiple subtests rather than a single number. Born to a Jewish family in Lespezi, Romania, he emigrated as a child to the United States and worked chiefly at Bellevue Hospital in New York.
