Born in colonial Singapore to Baghdadi Jewish parents, David Saul Marshall was a celebrated criminal defence lawyer — he is said to have won nearly a hundred acquittals — and a prisoner of the Japanese in Hokkaido during the war. In 1955 he became Singapore's first Chief Minister, opening the Legislative Assembly to elected government and resigning within a year when Britain refused full self-rule, exactly as he had promised he would.
He later served as ambassador to France, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland, and remained the conscience of Singapore's civil liberties debate to the end.
