Harel is an Israeli computer scientist at the Weizmann Institute of Science, best known for inventing Statecharts, a visual formalism for specifying reactive systems that was adopted into the UML standard and is used widely in engineering. He has also made major contributions to logics of programs, computability and the modelling of biological systems, and has served as president of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. He is Jewish and Israeli.
