Biography

David Brion Davis is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction

How & why

David Brion Davis was a Sterling Professor of History at Yale and the foremost authority on slavery and abolition in the Western world; his trilogy on 'The Problem of Slavery' — the first volume of which won the 1967 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction — reshaped the field, and he founded Yale's Gilder Lehrman Center for the study of slavery. Raised without religious affiliation, Davis converted to Judaism later in life, after his marriage, and had a bar mitzvah at age 80.
