Ariel Durant, born Chaya Kaufman to a Jewish family in the Russian Empire (now Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine), was an American writer who, with her husband Will Durant, co-authored the monumental eleven-volume 'The Story of Civilization', winning the 1968 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for 'Rousseau and Revolution'. She emigrated as a child to the United States and became an equal partner in one of the most widely read historical projects of the century. Her Jewish immigrant origins are documented.
