Daniel Sternheimer is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Mathematical physicist; deformation quantization
Sternheimer, who studied mathematics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem before joining France's CNRS in 1961, is a mathematical physicist of Jewish background. With Moshé Flato and collaborators he co-created deformation quantization (1978), a mathematically rigorous framework that reformulates quantum mechanics as a deformation of classical mechanics rather than an operator replacement. The idea reshaped mathematical physics and influenced work later recognized by a Fields Medal.
