German-American businessman who founded the first company to manufacture blue jeans. His firm, Levi Strauss & Co., began in 1853 in San Francisco.
Levi Strauss, a Bavarian-born Jewish immigrant to the United States, founded Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco and in 1873 patented, with tailor Jacob Davis, the copper-riveted work trousers that became blue jeans. The garment grew into one of the most widely worn clothing items in the world. Strauss was born into a Jewish family and remained an active member of the Jewish community in San Francisco.
