Daniel Kleppner

Kleppner, from a Jewish family, was an atomic physicist at Harvard and MIT. He co-invented the hydrogen maser, a device central to precise atomic clocks and to the accuracy of GPS, and pioneered the study of Rydberg atoms and cavity quantum electrodynamics. His work shaped modern precision measurement and the physics of atoms interacting with light.
