Mikhail Solomonovich Ioffe was a Soviet plasma physicist whose 1961 magnetic-mirror device demonstrated that plasma could be confined in a stable magnetic configuration, using field-shaping conductors known ever since as 'Ioffe bars' — a key step toward magnetic-confinement fusion. He was selected for the 1969 Atoms for Peace Award but was reportedly prevented by Soviet authorities from accepting it. He was of Jewish descent.
