Origins and early life
Daniel Itzig was born on 18 March 1723 in Berlin, into a Jewish family of the Prussian capital, and lived and died a Jew — the head, in his time, of the Jewish community of Berlin, in an age when so many of his descendants would leave it.
Work and career
His fortune was made in the mints: with his partner Ephraim he ran the mints of Frederick the Great through the Seven Years' War, financing the king's campaigns, and became court banker to Frederick and to his successor Frederick William II, 'the King's Jew' in the phrase of the age. In 1791 the king granted him and all his descendants a patent of naturalization — the first Prussian Jews to receive full civic rights, a generation before emancipation.
He used his position for his people: in 1778 he founded with his son-in-law David Friedländer the Jewish Free School of Berlin, the first modern Jewish school in Germany, in the spirit of his friend Moses Mendelssohn. And he was a patriarch: of his fifteen children, his daughter Fanny became the Vienna salonnière Fanny von Arnstein, his daughter Sara Levy the keeper of Bach's music, and his granddaughter Lea Salomon the mother of Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn. He died in Berlin on 17 May 1799.
