Born to a Jewish family in Rochester — his father Hyman ran a small candy store — Arthur Rock invented the profession Silicon Valley runs on. In 1957, as a young banker at Hayden Stone, he arranged the deal that let the 'traitorous eight' leave Shockley and found Fairchild Semiconductor. He moved west, coined the model of the technology venture capitalist, wrote the 1968 financing plan for Intel and chaired its board, and was one of Apple's earliest investors and directors. Nearly every venture fund on Sand Hill Road descends from his idea of backing people, not plans.
