Craig Newmark is recognized among Jewish contributors to Technology & Engineering — Founded Craigslist in 1995 as an email list of San Francisco events, and kept it free — which reshaped classified advertising and the newspapers that lived on it.
Craig Alexander Newmark was born in Morristown, New Jersey, to Joyce and Lee Newmark, a bookkeeper and an insurance and meat salesman, who were Jewish; he describes himself as a non-practising, secular Jew, and has joked that his rabbi was Leonard Cohen. He was a programmer at IBM, Bank of America and Charles Schwab before starting, in 1995, an email list of San Francisco arts and technology events for friends. It became Craigslist.
He kept almost all of it free, which is why it took the classified advertising that had paid for American newspapers — and why the sites that tried to copy it never quite could. He now funds journalism, cybersecurity and veterans' causes.
