Claudia Goldin is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Nobel laureate (2023) who chronicled women's place in the labor market; Nemmers Prize (2020)
Origins and early life
Claudia Goldin was born in the Bronx on 14 May 1946 to a Jewish family; her father managed data processing at Burlington Industries, her mother was the principal of a public school. She graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and entered Cornell meaning to be a microbiologist, before economics claimed her.
Work and career
In 1990 she became the first woman tenured in Harvard's economics department, where she is Henry Lee Professor of Economics and long directed the study of the American economy's development at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Across four decades she reconstructed the history of women's work in America: how the contraceptive pill changed career and marriage decisions, how the education of women and men together shaped their schooling, and why pay gaps persist.
Recognition
In 2023 she received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for having advanced our understanding of women's labour-market outcomes — the third woman to win it, and the first to win it alone.
