Ariel Pakes is recognized among Israeli contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Israeli-American econometrician of industrial organization; Nemmers Prize (2022)
Pakes is an econometrician whose methods let economists measure demand, market power, pricing and productivity in real industries; the models he built with co-authors (notably the BLP demand model and dynamic-industry frameworks) are now standard in empirical industrial organisation and antitrust analysis. He won the 2022 Nemmers Prize in Economics. He grew up in Edmonton, Canada, and as a young man moved to Jerusalem to study at the Hebrew University; he is of Jewish background.
