How & why

Chana Orloff was a Ukrainian-born sculptor of the École de Paris who became one of the leading portrait sculptors of interwar France, known for her stylized wood and bronze figures. She fled to Switzerland during the German occupation and later maintained close ties to Israel, where she died. She was Jewish, born into a Jewish family that emigrated to Ottoman Palestine before she settled in Paris.
