Celia Franca was born in London in 1921 to Polish Jewish immigrants and danced with Ballet Rambert and Sadler's Wells. Invited to Canada in 1951, she founded the National Ballet of Canada with no money, dancing, choreographing, sewing costumes and keeping the books herself in the first seasons, and directed the company for twenty-three years. She also co-founded its school. She was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.
