How & why

Cecil Hart was Jewish, a direct descendant of Aaron Hart, the first Jewish settler in Canada. He assembled the group that bought the Montreal Canadiens in 1921 and coached them to the Stanley Cup in 1930 and 1931. The Hart Trophy, given every year since 1924 to the most valuable player in the National Hockey League, was donated by his father David and is named for the family. He entered the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
