Biography

Angela Buxton is recognized among Jewish contributors to Sports — Tennis; won the 1956 Wimbledon doubles with Althea Gibson — a Jewish player and a Black player, both shunned, made history together

How & why

Buxton was a British Jewish tennis player who, in 1956, partnered the African American Althea Gibson to win the doubles titles at both the French Championships and Wimbledon. Both women faced exclusion — Buxton because of antisemitism in British tennis, Gibson because of racism — and their partnership became a celebrated story of two shunned outsiders making history together. Buxton's lifelong friendship with Gibson later helped support Gibson in her final years.
