Biography

How & why

Origins and early life

Caspar Weinberger was born on 18 August 1917 in San Francisco. His paternal grandfather, Nathan Weinberger, was a Jew from Bohemia, and his father Herman was of Jewish descent — the genealogy is not disputed, and the Jewish press of California has documented it; his mother was an Episcopalian, and Caspar was raised in her church and kept, all his life, a distance from any Jewish identity, which this fiche states as plainly as the grandparent by whom he figures here.

Work and career

A Harvard lawyer who fought in the Pacific, he rose through California politics — Reagan's finance director in Sacramento — and through the Nixon and Ford cabinets, where his budget-cutting earned him the nickname 'Cap the Knife'.

Recognition

As Secretary of Defense from 1981 to 1987 he presided over the largest peacetime military buildup in American history and the Strategic Defense Initiative, the policy of strength that the Reagan administration credited with the end of the Cold War; Britain made him an honorary knight for his support in the Falklands War. This fiche records the end as well: indicted in 1992 in the Iran-Contra affair, he was pardoned by President George H. W. Bush before trial. He died in Bangor, Maine, on 28 March 2006.
