Carl Benda

Carl Benda was a German cytologist and pathologist who, in 1898, first identified and named the mitochondria after observing the chain-like structures in cell cytoplasm with specialized staining. His term entered the permanent vocabulary of cell biology. He is documented among scientists of Jewish descent in Jewish biographical registries, though mainstream encyclopedias do not detail his religious background.
