Aaron Aaronsohn was a Jewish agronomist and botanist whose parents were among the founders of Zikhron Ya'akov, one of the first settlements of the First Aliyah. In 1906 he identified wild emmer wheat on the slopes of Mount Hermon — the wild ancestor of cultivated wheat, a finding of lasting importance to plant breeding — and founded an agricultural experiment station at Atlit. During the First World War he led NILI, the intelligence network that worked with the British against Ottoman rule.
