Milstein, son of Jewish immigrants to Argentina, worked in Cambridge on the chemistry of antibodies. With Georges Köhler he fused antibody-producing cells with tumour cells to create «hybridomas», immortal lines that make unlimited quantities of a single, defined antibody. These monoclonal antibodies transformed diagnostics and medicine, and he shared the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
