Biography

Boris Galerkin is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — The Galerkin method for solving differential equations

How & why

Galerkin devised, around 1915, an approximate method for solving differential equations and boundary-value problems that reduces them to a manageable system of equations. The Galerkin method became one of the foundations of the finite element method and is used throughout modern engineering and mathematical physics. He was born to a Jewish family in Polotsk and began working as a boy to support himself.
