Fritz John is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Partial differential equations; the John ellipsoid
Born in Berlin to a Jewish father, John was forced out of Nazi Germany in the 1930s and eventually joined the Courant Institute at NYU. He made fundamental contributions to partial differential equations, geometry and numerical analysis, including the John ellipsoid (the largest ellipsoid inside a convex body) and the concept of functions of bounded mean oscillation. His work gave analysts and geometers essential tools still central to those fields today.
