Origins and early life
Bernie Sanders is an American politician: mayor of Burlington from 1981, congressman for Vermont from 1991 and its senator since 2007, and the longest-serving independent in the history of the US Congress.
Work and career
Rolling Stone called him the 'amendment king' in 2005 for passing more roll-call amendments than any other member of the House since 1995. As chairman of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee he sponsored the Veterans' Access to Care through Choice, Accountability and Transparency Act of 2014, the response to the veterans' health scandal of that year, and the Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2013 (Public Law 113-52); much of his other effect came through amendments and through provisions folded into larger packages rather than through bills carrying his name.
He ran twice for the Democratic presidential nomination, in 2016 and 2020. He is Jewish, the son of a Polish-Jewish immigrant father whose relatives in German-occupied Poland were murdered in the Holocaust, and volunteered in 1963 on the Israeli kibbutz Sha'ar HaAmakim.
