Abraham Ribicoff was born to Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants from Poland, his father a factory worker, and became Connecticut's first and so far only Jewish governor. As Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Kennedy and then as Senator he pushed through the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, which made seat belts and crash standards compulsory — a law credited with hundreds of thousands of lives saved since.
