How & why

Born to a Lithuanian Jewish family in Warsaw, Mandelbrot survived Nazi-occupied France and built a wide-ranging career at IBM, where he recognized that irregular, self-similar 'fractal' patterns describe coastlines, financial markets and natural forms. His 1975 coinage of the word 'fractal' and his geometry transformed many fields of science.
