Strauss was a metallurgist at Krupp in Essen who, with Eduard Maurer, patented austenitic (chromium-nickel) stainless steel in 1912, discovering the corrosion resistance that made the alloy possible. He directed research at the firm and was named a professor by the Prussian ministry of education. He came from a Jewish family and was persecuted under the Nazi regime.
