Avraham Levy, an Israeli businessman, looked at what his country's sun did to parked cars and in 1970 folded corrugated cardboard into a simple answer: the accordion windshield sunshade. He sold it across Israel through the decade — a million of them, by his count — and patented the CarCool shade in the United States in 1980. The object became one of summer's most universal accessories, one of those inventions so obvious-seeming that only the patent record remembers it had an inventor.
