Origins and early life
Anish Kapoor was born on 12 March 1954 in Bombay. His mother, born Hilda Murad Elias, came from a prominent family of the Baghdadi Jewish diaspora that had left Baghdad for India around 1920; her father was the cantor of the synagogue in Pune and then in Bombay — Kapoor has told it himself in interviews over three decades, from the Los Angeles Times to the Jewish Chronicle and The Guardian, and this fiche repeats his words: 'We grew up with this very strong sense of being Jewish and not being Jewish.' His father, a Punjabi Hindu, was a hydrographer of the Indian Navy.
Work and career
He figures in this directory by that documented Jewish mother, and he lived in Israel from 1970 to 1973 before moving to London to study art. There he became one of the defining sculptors of his time: pigment-covered forms of the 1980s, the void pieces, the stainless-steel mirrors, and the public works known to millions — Cloud Gate in Chicago, the 'Bean' of 2006, and the ArcelorMittal Orbit for the London Olympics of 2012. He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1990, won the Turner Prize in 1991, and was knighted in 2013.
