Born in London to Jewish immigrants from Latvia, Brook became one of the most influential theatre and film directors of the twentieth century. From his stripped-bare 'empty space' aesthetic to landmark productions such as the nine-hour Mahābhārata, he reimagined what theatre could be, working for decades from his Paris base. He received the Kyoto Prize in 1991. He was Jewish.
