How & why
Mannheim was a French mathematician and army officer who developed the modern slide rule, standardizing in 1859 the arrangement of scales (including the cursor) that made the instrument a practical everyday calculating tool for generations of engineers. He also contributed to projective and kinematic geometry. He was Jewish.
