Origins and early life
Amar'e Carsares Stoudemire, who also bears the Hebrew name Yehoshophat ben Avraham, was drafted ninth overall by the Phoenix Suns in 2002 straight out of high school, was NBA Rookie of the Year in 2003, played six All-Star Games, was named to the All-NBA Team five times including the first team in 2007, and won an Olympic bronze medal with the United States in 2004.
Work and career
He played for the Suns, the New York Knicks, the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat before leaving the NBA in 2016, and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2026. He then went to Israel, where he part-owns Hapoel Jerusalem: he won the league cup and the Israeli championship with that club, and in 2020 the championship and the Finals MVP award with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Raised Baptist, and long associated through his mother with the Black Hebrew Israelites, he first visited Israel in 2010 to understand what he called his heritage, studied at the Ohr Somayach yeshiva in Jerusalem from 2018, received Israeli citizenship in 2019, and completed his conversion before a rabbinical court on 26 August 2020. He was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2025.
