Alfred E. Kahn was an American economist and the intellectual architect of U.S. airline deregulation: as chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board (1977–78) he dismantled fare and route controls, transforming air travel, and his two-volume 'The Economics of Regulation' became a standard text. Born to a Jewish family in Paterson, he also advised on inflation under President Carter and taught for decades at Cornell. His work reshaped the economics of regulated industries.
