How & why

Origins and early life

Colonel Albert Edward Williamson Goldsmid was a British Army officer, commissioned from Sandhurst into the 104th Regiment of Foot in 1866 and made colonel in 1894; he served in South Africa, was chief staff officer to General Kelly-Kenny and was present at the battle of Paardeberg.

Work and career

His father and his maternal grandfather had been born Jewish and had converted to Christianity to obtain what was then denied to Jews; Goldsmid, as an adult, converted back to Judaism, and always held that being Jewish had never harmed his military career. He founded the Jewish Lads' Brigade in 1895, for the children of the poor immigrant families then arriving in England, as well as the Maccabaeans, and in 1892 Baron de Hirsch chose him to supervise the Jewish agricultural colonies in Argentina.

Later years

He led the Hovevei Zion of Great Britain and Ireland and, from 1896 until his death, worked with Theodor Herzl as head of the British Zionist movement; he liked to say that he was the living Daniel Deronda of George Eliot's novel. He is buried in the Willesden Jewish cemetery in London.
