Yuri Lotman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Literary & drama critic
Yuri Lotman was a Soviet literary scholar and semiotician, founder of the Tartu–Moscow Semiotic School, who developed the influential concept of the 'semiosphere' — the semiotic space within which cultures produce meaning. He was Jewish, born into a Jewish family in Petrograd, and despite antisemitic barriers in Soviet academia he built a leading school of cultural analysis at the University of Tartu in Estonia. His studies of Russian literature and culture reshaped the humanities.
