Mordechai “Motta” Gur was born in Jerusalem in 1930 and spent almost his entire adult life in uniform. In June 1967 he commanded the 55th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade in the battle for Jerusalem; his men were the first to reach the Temple Mount and the Western Wall, and his radio message “The Temple Mount is in our hands” became one of the defining moments of the Six-Day War. From 1974 to 1978 he served as the tenth Chief of Staff of the IDF, rebuilding the army's confidence after the Yom Kippur War and approving and overseeing the 1976 rescue of the hostages at Entebbe. He later served as a member of the Knesset and as a government minister, and died in Tel Aviv in 1995.
