Yelena Bonner was born to Ruf Bonner, a Jewish communist from Siberia, and an Armenian father; both were seized in the purges — her father shot, her mother sent to the camps for eight years. She served as a front-line nurse, was wounded and nearly blinded, then trained as a paediatrician. A founder of the Moscow Helsinki Group in 1976, she read Sakharov's Nobel Peace Prize lecture in Oslo when he was refused a passport, and after his death carried on as the most audible voice of Soviet and then Russian human rights.
