Egon Schwelb was a Czech Jewish jurist who, forced to flee the Nazis, became deputy director of the UN Division of Human Rights. As John Humphrey's deputy he helped shape the early machinery behind the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the international human-rights system. His scholarship became a foundation for the field of international human-rights law.
