Yehuda Amichai is widely regarded as Israel's foremost modern Hebrew poet, whose plainspoken, ironic verse wove everyday life, love and war into a new poetic language and made him one of the most translated Hebrew poets in the world. Born Ludwig Pfeuffer into an Orthodox Jewish family in Germany, he emigrated to Mandatory Palestine as a boy.
