William Steig was an American cartoonist for The New Yorker who became a celebrated children's author, creating Shrek! (1990), the basis of the film franchise, and Doctor De Soto, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and Abel's Island. His witty drawings and warm, verbally rich stories won a Caldecott Medal and a Newbery Honor. He was Jewish, the son of Polish-Jewish immigrants.
