Son of German-Jewish immigrants, William Rosenberg left school in eighth grade during the Depression, delivered telegrams, and after the war sold coffee and doughnuts from converted trucks to Boston factory workers. In 1950 he opened a shop in Quincy called Dunkin' Donuts. His larger invention was the way it multiplied: Rosenberg was the great evangelist of franchising, founded the International Franchise Association in 1960, and taught a generation that a working man could own his own store.
