Born to Jewish parents in Chicago, Jay Pritzker bought a motel by the Los Angeles airport in 1957 — Hyatt House — and with his brother built it into Hyatt Hotels, the atrium-lobbied chain that changed how the world does business travel. In 1979 he and his wife Cindy created the Pritzker Architecture Prize, architecture's Nobel, which has honored Gehry, Hadid, Niemeyer and Ando. The family name is on Chicago's pavilion, its schools and its skyline.
