Kentridge is a South African artist celebrated for his animated films made by repeatedly drawing, erasing and redrawing charcoal on paper, and for large-scale drawing, theatre and opera productions that grapple with apartheid, colonialism and memory. He received the 2010 Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy. He was born in Johannesburg into a Jewish family; his parents, Sydney Kentridge and Felicia Geffen, were prominent anti-apartheid lawyers.
