Leontief, whose mother came from a wealthy Jewish family of Odessa, grew up in St. Petersburg and emigrated via Germany to the United States. He built input-output analysis, a way of mapping an entire economy as a giant grid showing how each industry's output feeds every other industry, making the web of economic interdependence measurable. For this practical tool, widely used in planning and forecasting, he was awarded the 1973 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.
