How & why

Kaufmann was a Princeton philosopher whose translations and interpretation rescued Nietzsche from the Nazi distortions of his work, presenting him as a serious thinker of existentialism and the humanities. Raised Lutheran, at age eleven he learned that all four of his grandparents were Jewish and formally converted to Judaism before later becoming a critic of organized religion. He fled Nazi Germany and served in U.S. intelligence during the war.
