Biography

Victor Kac is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Kac-Moody algebras in representation theory

How & why

Kac, a Soviet-born Jewish mathematician who emigrated to the United States, co-founded the theory of Kac–Moody algebras, infinite-dimensional generalisations of Lie algebras that became central to representation theory, integrable systems and string theory. His work on affine algebras and vertex operators links pure mathematics with theoretical physics. He received the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 2015.
